For the academic year 2025–2026, the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka has published official guidelines for student registration and selection letter downloads. Following the correct process is crucial to securing your admission if you have been chosen for a course of study at a state university.

An overview of the online registration process for UGC

First, go to the UGC Portal.

• Go to www.ugc.ac.lk, the official UGC website. Find the University Registrations 2025/2026 section on the homepage. There are two main options there:

  To register and download the Letter of Selection:

  If you haven’t downloaded your selection documents yet, choose this.
  To go straight to the registration process:

  If you have already downloaded your selection letter, Annex I, and Annex II, select this.

Step 2: Verify your identity and log in

• Enter the password and User ID (your registered email address) that you used to submit your first university application. If you need to recover your password, click the “Forgot Password” link.
• Fill in the remaining digits to complete your National Identity Card (NIC) number.
• Fill in the four missing digits to confirm the pre-filled mobile number.
• To proceed to OTP verification, click the Submit button.

Step 3: Verification of Mobile OTP and Email Link

• Look for a message from the Department of University Admissions in the inbox of your registered email address.
• In the email, click the link labelled “Please click here to generate OTP.”
• Your verified mobile number will receive an SMS with an OTP code.
• Click Submit after entering the code in the SMS Code field on the OTP Verification page.

Step 4: Registering and Downloading Selection Documents

• You will be taken to the Selection Letters page after authenticating. Download the combined file containing your selection letter, Annex I, and Annex II. Online Application for University Admission in 2024 and 2025

Candidates who passed the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination in 2024 and met the minimum requirements for university admission will be eligible to apply to Sri Lankan universities thru the University Grants Commission (UGC). The candidates have already been notified by the Commissioner General of Examinations as to whether they meet the minimal requirements for admission to the university.
